We're a 10:10 University

Everybody is looking for something to do about climate change. What's needed is something straightforward, immediate and meaningful.

On 1 September the University joined thousands of organisations and individuals from across the country to unite behind one simple idea: a ten per cent cut in carbon emissions during 2010.

We've become:

 university-01

Cutting ten per cent in one year is a bold target, but it is in line what scientists say we need right now. By signing up to we're not just promising to reduce our own emissions - we're becoming part of a national drive to hit this ambitious goal in every sector of society. In addition, Hefce has proposed 50 per cent cut by 2010 for the Higher Education sector.

What can you do?

It's easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but uniting large numbers of people and institutions around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables all of us to make a meaningful difference.

As an individual you can:

Make sure your own actions become low carbon (get started with these tips

  • Join 10:10! Go to 1010uk.org and sign up
  • Stick your 10:10 checklist on your fridge
  • Tell ten friends about 10:10

What will the University do?

We will focus on four key areas - electricity, on-site fuel (mainly gas), road transport and air travel. Addressing these areas will be coupled with other initiatives such as, increasing recycling, starting food waste collection and reducing the amount or printing paper we use.

Our approach is three-fold. We will:

  • Improve our infrastructure and facilities
  • Continuously revisit our strategy to ensure we are working efficiently towards the target
  • Raise the profile of environmental issues amongst staff and students with the aim of embedding green thinking in everything we do
