Sustainable Communities
This research group was set up in 2004 to investigate the initiation, development, design and management of mixed income and mixed tenure housing developments in response to the ODPM's policy initiative in 2003 entitled Sustainable Communities: Building for the Future. In 2004 the Group was awarded a contract by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation to prepare a Good Practice Guide on Creating and Sustaining Mixed Income Communities. The project team included Professor Nick Bailey, Anna Haworth, Dr Tony Manzi and Professor Marion Roberts, together with Primali Paranagamage who was appointed Research Fellow. The Good Practice Guide was published in 2006. In 2007 the team was invited to prepare a revised version of the Guide which related specifically to Scotland.

In 2007 the team carried out an evaluation of the masterplan for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trusts proposed urban extension at Derwenthorpe in York.
In 2007 Nick Bailey and Tony Manzi worked with Urbed Ltd on a commission from English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation entitled Mixed Communities: Good Practice Guidance for management and Service Provision.

The group regularly participates in conferences and workshops organised by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Department for Communities and Local Government and has made a number of presentations to professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Housing annual conferences in England and Scotland.
We continue to investigate mixed housing developments and have a particular interest in processes of collaboration between sectors, housing design, place shaping and infrastructure provision, provision for special needs and community facilities, sustainable management and the development of social capital in new communities.
