Economics and Quantitative Methods (EQM)

The Department of Economics and Quantitative Methods (EQM) consists of 36 permanent lecturing staff, including two research fellows, supported by a number of visiting lecturers. We cover a range of specialisms in economics, statistics and management science and share a strong commitment to high quality teaching and research.

The Department is a big contributor to the School’s Undergraduate  programmes, and hosts a specialist BSc in Business Economics as well as an economics pathway in the BA Business Management.

We have developed innovative approaches to teaching, including the extensive use of ICT in the delivery of large undergraduate core modules in economics. Our commitment to teaching innovation is reflected in our role as the London convenor for the national Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) in Economics. A member of the Department received in 2008 the Network’s e-learning award for our use of ICT in our problem-based first year undergraduate economics module.

Research

We have strong research interests in:

  • the economics of labour markets and education
  • behavioural economics
  • international and development economics
  • economics of film and the leisure industries
  • the economics of financial and forecasting markets
  • emerging markets
  • foreign direct investment
  • political economy

 

Departmental staff participate in the work of two Research Centres: the Centre for Employment Research and the Centre for Finance and Financial Services. A number of research students are studying for a PhD degree.

Business Services

Staff in the Department undertake consultancy projects under the Centre for Employment Research.
