Andrew Caink is a Principal Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics. He is Course Leader for the BA English & Linguistics Combinations, on which students combine English Literature, English Language, Linguistics and Creative Writing in Joint or Major/Minor combinations. He lectures on the English language, theoretical syntax and Literary Linguistics.
He was educated at local comprehensive schools in Hertford and Erith, and the universities of Oxford (Hertford College, BA Hons English Language and Literature, 1987), Bristol (PGCE English, 1988) and Durham (MA Applied Linguistics, 1993; PhD Theoretical Linguistics, 1998) and has lectured at the Universities of Durham, Lapland, and Wolverhampton. He has also taught English Language in Finland, Poland and Bulgaria. His research to date has been in theoretical syntax, focusing on English and South Slavic languages, stylistics, and syntactic issues in Bilingual First Language Acquisition (English-Bulgarian); his short fiction has appeared in Stand, Succour, Riptide, and other anthologies. He has supervised PhD students working on theoretical syntax and stylistics and would be interested in hearing from prospective students wishing to pursue postgraduate study in generative syntax, stylistics and related areas.
