Patricia Ashby was educated at the University of Lancaster (where she studied for a BA in English) and at UCL (where, as a postgraduate student, she completed an MA and then a PhD, both in phonetics). She joined the University of Westminster staff in 1975 as a Visiting Lecturer when the University was still the Polytechnic of Central London. She has taught phonetics and phonology all over the world, including Belgium, Germany, India, Poland and Japan, and in the UK at the universities of Reading, Oxford and UCL (working on the UCL Summer Course in English Phonetics programme where she is currently Director of the IPA Certificate Strand) as well as here at Westminster. She is the author of a number of books on phonetics including the popular Speech Sounds, published by Routledge, and Undersanding Phonetics, published by Hodder Education. She held a full-time permanent post at the University of Westminster from 1982 until 2011..
Patricia's main research interests are in the areas of phonetic pedagogy, allophonic variation in English speech, and English intonation. Her currently research focuses on pre-vodcasting as an aid to learning, l-vocalization, and fricative articulation (especially devoicing) in English and Polish.
Outside of the University, she is a Member of Council of the International Phonetic Association, for which she is also the Examinations Secretary, running the Certificate in the Phonetics of English which takes place annually each summer. Since retiring, Patricia continues to represent her subject area at national level, maintaining her involvement with the Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies (formerly the LLAS Subject Centre). She is a member of the Committee for Linguistics in Education, a member of the Higher Education Academy, an honorary Vice President of the Spelling Society (formerly the Simplified Spelling Society), and a member of the British Association for Academic Phoneticians. Patricia was a founder member of the University Council for General and Applied Linguistics.
Patricia is an Emeritus Fellow to the University of Westminster and a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
