Patricia Hogwood is a Reader in European Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR).  She completed her PhD in European Studies at the University of Bradford and taught at the universities of Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Glasgow before coming to the University of Westminster in 2004.  She works in the fields of comparative European politics and European Union politics, with a country specialism in German politics.

Research and supervision interests

German politics: German state and popular identity; the former GDR as a transitional democracy; and citizenship and immigration policy.

Current projects:

  • consumerism in relation to political identity; the politics of behavioural change in the promotion of subjective wellbeing;
  • Germany’s efforts to ‘export’ immigration control beyond the external borders of the European Union. 

European Union Politics: multilevel governance and territorial politics; external relations and the ‘near neighbours’; EU immigration policy and EU environmental policy. 

 Current projects:

  • the institutionalisation and securitisation of EU immigration control;
  • EU policies on flood resilience.   

The politics of devolution in the UK: the devolved administrations and EU policymaking.
