Research
The Department of Politics and International Relations has a well-established international reputation as a centre of innovative and cutting-edge research. We have a lively research environment, with regular seminars and conferences, over 30 PhD students, and have been successful in securing a number of large externally-funded research grants.
Our research is concentrated in three areas:
- Political theory, democratic theory, the study of democracy in different regions of the world, such as the Middle East and the United States, and understanding the dynamics of democratization. This research is undertaken within the internationally renowned Centre for the Study of Democracy, which is hosted within the department.
- Environmental politics, sustainability, and governance issues. This research is pursued within the Governance and Sustainability Programme
- Security studies and international relations and involves research into IR theory, security and resilience, borders and identities, and intervention and state-building. This research is grouped within the Security and International Relations Programme.
