General Information
Ian Hodges is Senior Lecturer in Psychology and teaches in the following areas; psychotherapy and counselling, critical psychology, qualitative methods, psychology of sexuality, social psychology. He is module leader for the following courses: Psychology of Counselling (BSc), Critical Psychology (BSc), Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology (MSc) and Advanced Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology (MSc). He is Subject Leader for the new MSc Psychology conversion course (from 2012) and the Psychology Combined Studies programme. He is also Admissions Tutor for the MSc in Research Methods for Psychological Practice.
Background
Ian studied Psychology and Sociology at the University of Reading and undertook his PhD research at Goldsmiths College, London, supervised by Prof. Nikolas Rose. His thesis (1998) was entitled ‘A Problem aired: Exploring Radio Therapeutic Discourse and Ethical Self-formation.’ Ian has had a long standing interest in psychotherapy and counselling, especially in relation to the lack of clients’ and patients’ voices in research and the use of constructionist and narrative approaches in psychotherapeutic practice. He has undertaken training in Group Analysis, Psychoanalysis and is currently training in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling. Ian has been a member of the BPS Standing Committee for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities and Treasurer for the BPS Psychology of Sexualities Section.
Research Interests
Psychotherapy: using existential and psychoanalytic approaches with sexual minority and other clients, existential approaches to anxiety and depression.Critical Psychology: psychotherapeutic discourse, poststructuralist, constructionist and narrative approaches to counselling and psychotherapy, identity and self-formation.
Psychology of Sexuality: Social psychological aspects of homophobia and heteronormativity, sexual prejudice, minority sexual identity, social psychological aspects of HIV/AIDS.
Qualitative Methods: esp. discourse analysis, epistemological issues.
I am primarily interested in engaging critical and post-foundationalist social theory with more traditional psychological problems/frameworks especially in relation to psychotherapy and counselling practice. Theoretically I have a particular interest in poststructuralism, especially the work of Michel Foucault, methodologically I am interested in qualitative approaches to psychological inquiry and related epistemological debates/issues.
Research Activities
Previous projects have utilised contemporary social psychological approaches to the analysis of counselling and psychotherapeutic talk. Drawing upon discourse and conversation analysis, I employed a methodological framework informed by poststructuralist theory (esp. the work of Michel Foucault) to map some of the power relations which operate through psychotherapeutic discourse. My current projects include developing ways to challenge heteronormativity in psychoanalytic theory and practice, especially as this relates to working with sexual minority clients, and qualitative studies of gay men’s and other minority student experiences of Psychology in Higher Education WiDER (with Carol Pearson and Sanjay Jobanputra).
