General Information

The main focus of my research is on the psychology of interpersonal attraction, with a specific interest in physical and non-physical attractiveness. Much of my research takes a cross-cultural perspective and, with Martin Tovée, I have been examining perceptions of the ideal body size in different cultural and national settings. David Frederick and I have also set up the first International Body Project (IBP-I), an international collaborative effort that seeks to understand body image and physical attraction across cultures.
Relatedly, I take an interest in issues relating to body image, including the impact of body art on interpersonal perceptions, weight-based prejudice, and predictors of interest in cosmetic surgery. I also maintain an interest in the growing field of positive body image, particularly in the search for factors that promote or hinder positive body image. I have also worked on the development of psychometric scales for the measurement of body dissatisfaction, primarily the Photographic Figure Rating Scale.
Finally, I am interested in personality and individual differences research and, in collaboration with Adrian Furnham, Martin Voracek, and Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, I have examined factors that are associated with such issues as conspiracy theories, willingness to buy counterfeit goods, mental health literacy, post-migratory adjustment, and intelligence. Some of this research has also been conducted with colleagues at HELP University College, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Related work includes the translation and validation of various psychological scales, primarily for use among Malay-speaking populations.
