Research Interests

Students in Higher Education; Pragmatic Aspects of Language; Language and Communication.

General Information

Hazel studied psychology at Queen's University, Belfast and gained her PhD from University College, London. She is also qualified as a Clinical Psychologist. She has researched aspects of sentence processing in children, especially the role of noun animacy. She has a particular interest in how research in the area of psycholinguistics can be applied to the assessment of language and communication difficulties in children and adults. She is the author (with Susie Summers) of The Pragmatics Profile of Everyday Communication Skills (NFER-Nelson). Her current research concerns what the expectations of Psychology undergraduates are at the outset of their studies and how levels of achievement may be predicted. She has been actively involved in the development of an electronically-based peer-mentoring scheme, an innovative 'e-mentoring' project being piloted here at the University of Westminster.
