About Us
Thank you for your interest in the University of Westminster School of Law. Our website aims to provide information about the range of courses currently offered by the Law School located in Central London. We believe we have the best location of any London University, just a short walk from Oxford Circus, Regent’s Park and Soho. Our taught courses range from undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and research degrees. We also offer conversion courses for non-law graduates wishing to embark upon a career in law.
As well as being a top-rated school for research, the School is known for a practical approach to Law and the faculty for a friendly approach to teaching and learning. We offer students a high degree of personal attention and use small group work wherever possible.
The Law School has four departments. The Department of Advanced Legal Studies is responsible for PhD and Masters programmes, The Department of Professional Legal Studies for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and the Legal Practice Course (LPC), The Department of Academic Legal Studies for the main LLB programme and the Department of Applied Legal Studies for the Solicitors’ Exempting degree and ILEX courses.
As well as the general resources provided by the University of Westminster and the Law School, students in the Department of Advanced Legal Studies Legal Studies and Department of Professional Legal Studies have access to dedicated computing facilities and common rooms. There is an on-site library containing a wealth of legal and social science materials, a skills suite and mock courtroom. The library provides a visually attractive study environment and there is access to a range of electronic resources. The Law School building is within easy reach of additional student recreation facilities in Regent Street, New Cavendish Street and Wells Street. The School has good access to international research materials.
Most staff engage in research and publication. In the Department of Professional Legal Studies staff produce well known practitioner texts. More generally, the School has an international reputation in international and comparative law, socio-legal research and international commercial and financial law. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2001 the School was awarded 5, one of the top classifications and in the 2009 exercise 85% of the research submitted was rated ‘international quality’.
The most significant indication of the quality of the teaching provided by the Law School is the continuing success of our former students. Large numbers of our graduates enter the legal profession and many are highly successful. Our alumni include presidents of the Law Society, judges and QCs, as well as young lawyers or barristers of the year. In 2006 alone, eight former students became QCs. Others, often our Masters and PhD students, have chosen careers in international tribunal and commercial institutions or as academics, We are rightly proud of all our former students, and keep in touch with them through an active (Alumni Association.)
The Schools has extensive links with institutions and professional contacts throughout the world. Support for international students is available through our (International Education Office) and International Student Officer. The University has good quality (Halls of Residence) in attractive locations close to its campuses.

Dean of the School of Law
