Martin began his professional career working as a technician for the Public Health Laboratory Service in Reading and London in diagnostic bacteriology, mycology and mycology laboratories, where he gained election as both an Associate and then a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. Leaving the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, he then took up a Lectureship in Microbiology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic for two years. Returning to UK allowed him to become established as a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences first in Paddington College and later at the University of Westminster. Whilst lecturing, he obtained an MSc and PhD at Birkbeck College, University of London by studying part-time over seven years.

He is now Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, where he manages a group of eighteen academic staff. He also has a cross-School role as Short Course Director and remains an active teacher of medical bacteriology sand parasitology. His other areas of interest are developing teaching programmes for biomedical sciences outside the UK, for example in West Africa and infectious diseases of the honey bee, Apis mellifera. He has been an external examiner in Rwanda and |Brunei and undertaken consultancy work in The Gambia.
