Gaining credit

Undergraduates and postgraduates

If your course is related to your previous study or experience (whether in paid work or a voluntary capacity) you may be able to make a case to gain exemptions from some modules through one of two forms of assessment.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the accreditation of previously acquired certificated learning and it might include Open University modules or in-company training, for example. The Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (AP(E)L) recognises knowledge or skills acquired through life, work experience and study which has not been formally attested through any academic or professional certification. It might include, for example, computer programming, editing skills or organisational skills.

The assessment of eligibility is made at the time of admission. It is your responsibility to make a claim if you think you may be eligible. The process is rigorous but guidance will be available from the admissions tutor or course leader of your preferred course of study. In presenting your claim, you may have to demonstrate your prior learning through one of the following: portfolio, viva, artefact, performance or assessment submissions. Credit will only be awarded for learning which is current and which relates to the aims and content of the course for which you are applying.
