The Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Sciences is offered by the School of Life Sciences and provides the opportunity to produce doctoral level practice-based research based upon professional expertise and the work of your organisation.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will normally hold a Masters degree or acceptable equivalent and have at least three years appropriate work experience.

Applicants whose secondary level education has not been conducted in the medium of English should also demonstrate evidence of appropriate English language proficiency, normally defined as:

IELTS 6.5 (overall band score with not less than 6 in any of the individual elements)

TOEFL (Internet Based) 91

TOEFL (Paper Based) 570

Cambridge Proficiency Pass

Ethics Approval

You are also asked to take into account any ethical dimensions of your proposed research at this preliminary stage of the application process as, if your research requires Research Ethics Sub-Committee approval, you will need to undertake the appropriate ethics approval processes at the appropriate stage.

Application Timetable

You should aim to submit your application by Friday 17 June 2011.

Applications are submitted online via UKPASS (Postgraduate Application Service).  These are the documents you will have to submit along with the UKPASS online application form:

a) A brief overview of your research topic (approximately 600 words), including why it is of interest to you, who would be the subject of your research, and how it relates to your current employer or organisation.

b) Scanned copies of all your relevant qualification certificates and transcripts.

c) If your award is pending, please upload the transcript of the modules already undertaken.

d) Applicants whose secondary level education has not been conducted in the medium of English should also demonstrate evidence of appropriate English language proficiency.

e) 2 academic references. Please note that it is your responsibility to contact your referees and arrange for the references.  These can be uploaded with your UKPASS application, sent by email to researchadmissions@westminster.ac.uk or sent to the Research Office at the address below:

After you have submitted your application

When we receive your application we will check to make sure that all the necessary documents have been submitted. Your application will then be forwarded to the relevant academic School for consideration by academic staff. If academic staff wish to take your application further they will invite you to interview (by phone if necessary). You will be notified of the outcome of your application by the Research Office.
