It's a well known fact that most students have to survive on a very tight budget. The key to coping with this tight budget, however, is to work out an accurate and realistic budget plan, keep track of your spending and make sure that you're receiving all the money that you are entitled to.

The Student Advisers can also help you to work out a budget and check that you are claiming everything that you are entitled to, including social security benefits. If you are eligible for a student loan and have taken you maximum entitlement but are still in financial difficulty, then you can apply to the university's Access To Learning Fund.
Combining study and work
Most students will need to work to supplement their income. To assess what work you can do alongside your studies, you will need to find out about your study commitments, calculate the hours you have available to undertake part-time work, and understand your tax position. Tax is payable only if your earnings rise above the single person's tax-free allowance for the rate for this tax year, please see the Inland Revenue for more information.
The University has a special Career Development Centre to help you find appropriate work and experience to complement your academic studies, prepare you for the workplace and in many cases, supplement your income.
