Who pays the home rate of tuition fee
Although we do not assess fee status for the University, the Student Advisers can give you detailed information and advice about the rules for home fee status. When you have a course offer the Admissions Office will assess your fee status. In order to do this they may ask you to complete a fee assessment form called Form E. This is usually sent with the course offer letter.
Fee status is assessed before the start of the course and normally remains the same for the duration of the course. However, in some circumstances fee status can change partway through a course and if you have been paying the international fee rate you may become eligible for home fees during your course. For example, this is applicable to people who are granted asylum in the UK or people with at least three years residence in the UK/EEA/Switzerland before the first day of the first academic year of their course, who either become the family member of an EU national or the child of a Swiss national during their studies.
Please note, if you qualify for a change in fee status part-way through your course, you will not normally be charged home fees until the beginning of the next academic year.
The home fee rules are complex. Detailed information about the qualifying rules for home fee status can be found in the UKCISA information Sheet called: Tuition Fees for Study in England, Wales or Northern Ireland
If you would like to discuss your fee status or you have been paying international fees but you believe you may qualify for home fees as a result of a change in your status, please contact Student Advice to discuss your individual circumstances.
RECENT CHANGE IN RULES, from 1 September 2011: new rules mean that some non UK or EU national students who are the relevant family members of UK/EU nationals may not need three years residence in the UK/EEA or Switzerland themselves before the first day of the first academic year of their course in order to qualify for home fees. Instead, the relevant UK/EU family member must meet the residence requirements. For more information about this change please refer category 3 of the UKCISA guidance called "Tuition Fees for Study in England, Wales and Northern Ireland"
Financial help for undergraduate students
In many cases, if you are eligible to pay home rate fees and you are an undergraduate student, you may also be eligible to apply for Student Finance England funding including a fee loan to pay your fees. For detailed information about the qualifying rules please see UKCISA's Information Sheet on Student Support and also visit the Directgov Student Finance England website. If you will be studying an undergraduate degree course and you are EEA national or the family member of an EEA national you should also visit our European Students funding page.
*For courses that start in September/October the first day of the first academic year of your course is always defined as 1 September.
